About
Marc has worked in the property and construction industry for over 35 years - a Chartered Building Surveyor and Project Manager, his career in architectural, surveying and construction firms and in global consultancies such as Gleeds and Arcadis, has provided a wealth of project and professional services experience throughout the UK and internationally.
Marc is equally at home with new build and refurbishment, domestic and commercial, across most property sectors and building types. His roles have supported corporate clients like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Blackrock; celebrity and high net worth clients including 3 Michelin starred Michel Roux OBE and Sean Bean; charities and housing associations such as Centrepoint, Genesis, The Salvation Army and public sector bodies covering education, local authority, NHS and blue-light services.
In addition to commercial projects, Marc has worked on buildings of historic and Listed status, including churches, stately homes and manor houses, schools, hotels and dockyards. Often called in to assist with bespoke, complex and ‘high-end’ projects, clients benefit from Marc’s experience and attention to detail. As a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, his understanding of construction trades and techniques has led to involvement with disputes, mediation and acting as Expert Witness in arbitrations and litigations.
Understanding project ‘risk’, allows Marc to provide the guidance necessary to steer and deliver a development or acquisition from inception to completion.
More information can be found in the ‘Services’ section of this website and includes Building Surveying, Project Management, Employer’s Agent, Contract Administration, Technical Due Diligence, Fund Monitor, Defects Analysis, Quality Monitoring/Clerk of Works and Independent Certifier roles.
Aside from the technical and construction knowledge they benefit from, clients simply like working with Marc
- valuing and trusting both his experience and the integrity
through which he operates.

Services
Recognised internationally as an expert in TDD, Marc advises funders and investors on the technical risk associated with the acquisition of a building or portfolio. Marc has covered UK, pan-European and world-wide portfolios for clients such as JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Fortress Investment Group, Starwood Capital, Blackrock and many more.
Quickly assessing building fabric and structure condition, mechanical and electrical installations, capital expenditure budgets, undertaking document reviews and liaising with solicitors in regards contracts, leases, collateral warranties and service charges and managing teams of specialists, make this a vital high-end service for lenders.
Dealing with complex schemes, regeneration and large-scale construction projects, Marc is able to communicate, manage and deliver results from diverse client & consultant teams and contractors, recognising stakeholders’ differing drivers, priorities, strengths and specialisations. Whether involved with large or small scale projects, Marc has the ability to understand strategic and corporate goals, whilst focussing on the intricacies of project detail.
With strong contractual knowledge and understanding, Marc is more than comfortable running design and build projects, where the role of contract administrator / project manager / client representative is frequently undertaken by a single party. JCT contracts provide the formal role of ‘Employer’s Agent’ in D&B contracts, which although with different powers and authority to a Contract Administrator, is often considered similar to the contract administration function.
Whether advising on damp, roof leaks or cracks, to undertaking large scale, invasive forensic investigations, Marc has a wealth of building pathology experience on both domestic and commercial scale buildings - assessing causes and remedial measures in regards maintenance issues and construction defects.
Independently monitoring the quality of construction works fell out of favour for a long while as the industry placed increased reliance on contractors with a design and build liability.
Grenfell was perhaps the biggest singular modern example and cause for change in the industry – bringing about a new focus on the quality of works during the construction phase. Marc has been involved in many disputes and post-contract defects cases, where problems have arisen because the right attention to construction workmanship and materials wasn’t given on site.
As Clerk of Works, Quality Monitor or NEC Supervisor, the role of assessing works in progress is vital to the industry and end users – contact Marc to discuss site inspection services.
Simply put, statutory legislation originating in the London Building (Amendment) Act, is in place to protect neighbours’ interests and control building works and excavations on or nearby another owner’s land or property.
‘Party Structures’ can be walls dividing houses horizontally, as in a terraced property; or vertically as in the floors/ceilings between flats and apartments. Legislation provides protocols and statutory time periods governing how ‘Building Owners’ notify neighbours of their intentions and works.
Marc is able to act for ‘Building Owners’ assisting in the process of proper notification; and also for ‘Adjoining Owners’ who have been served ‘notice’ by their neighbours.
A full range of industry standard building and engineering contracts are available covering projects from small scale, domestic and residential works, to major new build schemes via both traditional and ‘design & build’ procurement routes. In addition to the standard forms, Marc is also experienced with bespoke, PPP and PFI contracts.
Marc brings a wealth of traditional surveying skills and experience gained from domestic, commercial, private and public body property portfolios. Marc undertakes the following services:
- Flat and home buyer’s reports
- Building condition surveys
- Structural surveys
- Planned preventative maintenance (PPM) surveys
- Defects analysis surveys
- Schedules of condition
- Technical Due Diligence
- Pre-Acquisition
With experience in residential and housing schemes, healthcare and hospitals, light industrial, storage facilities, Cat A offices, retail and educational, Marc is able to support new build projects, in a variety of roles and functions from project management, to contract administration, quality monitoring and snagging.
From surveys, to extensions and conversions - large or small scale renovation and refurbishment - Marc provides advice on all levels of property care, repair, maintenance and improvement works.
Major developments are often funded by corporate investors and private equity funds. Such parties require a professional and experienced ‘Monitor’ that sits outside of the design and construct team, to advise Funders that all is in order and progressing in an appropriate manner. Monitor roles tend to cover the project from design and development, through procurement, construction, quality and progress reporting, cost and valuation advice, statutory approvals, conditions and discharges, all the way to snagging and handover documentation.
Whether as project manager or consulting in other roles, Marc is able to support redevelopment projects from feasibility through to completion. Factors affecting the viability and success of a redevelopment include local planning policies, whole life costs, sustainability, carbon counting and ESG issues, as much as programme, procurement and risk.
Marc is experienced at putting together and managing the ‘right’ teams of specialists that make for successful projects.
With an extensive understanding of construction trades and techniques, British Standards, regulations, HTMs, HBNs and codes of practice, Marc is ideally placed to quickly assess the quality of work being undertaken, ensuring a quality end product is delivered to the client.
These skills have led to Marc’s involvement in disputes, arbitrations and litigations, particularly those relating to workmanship, compliance with specification and design & build type issues.
Client Representative roles take different forms with varying levels of responsibility and authority. Whether acting for an experienced or lay-client, advising a funder or literally acting as the client’s Agent, Marc’s breadth of industry experience together with knowledge of the different industry disciplines and procurement routes, makes for an indispensable partner to have on board protecting the client’s interests.
The quality of the end product is ultimately dictated by the strength and detail of the project documentation – whether using traditional specification and drawings, or design & build based ‘Employer’s Requirements’.
Experience to know what’s weak, what’s missing and what the contractor might exploit, comes through years of dealing with just such issues. For review or support throughout the process, contact Marc for advice.
Advising on risk and building condition, whether in regards a house, office or hotel, an industrial building or whether it’s a single asset or portfolio, Marc is experienced in assessing condition and quality of building fabric and structure, be it at home or abroad and in managing teams of engineers and other specialists covering mechanical & electrical installations to present fullest advice prior to acquiring an asset.
A full range of industry standard building and engineering contracts are available covering projects from small scale, domestic and residential works, to major new build schemes. The standard forms cover fully designed, design & build, and ‘contractor’s designed portion’ styles of procurement.
In addition to these standard contracts, Marc is experienced with bespoke and PPP / PFI contracts. Marc’s contract administration experience covers most sectors, including residential schemes, healthcare and hospitals, light industrial developments, storage facilities, Cat A offices, retail and education.
